Petitions for expungement allow a person to seal a criminal history from the view of employers and the general public. Expungements are available for anyone that has been arrested and was never charged or the case ended in a dismissal (without a conviction) and even for those that do have convictions. Indiana law does provide various time limits on when a petition can be filed and misdemeanors and many felonies can be expunged.
If the Petition is granted, several rights will be restored including: voting rights, jury service rights, ability to run for public office, and ability to possess a firearm. Furthermore, credit reporting agencies cannot report the expunged arrest or conviction either and employers cannot discriminate based on an expunged arrest or conviction.
